DESTINÉES

11 composers on the eve of the Enlightenment

SUNDAY, JUNE 15TH 2025 - 17:00

Sophie de Bardonnèche, violIn
Justin Taylor, harpsichord

Around famous harpsichordist and composer Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, violinist Sophie de Bardonnèche and harpsichordist Justin Taylor follow in the footsteps of a dozen French women composers of the 17th and 18th centuries: Mlle Duval, Mlle Laurant, Mlle de Noailles… A singular journey through French Baroque music, rich in previously unpublished material.

After Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Mlle Duval is the second woman to have one of her operas, Les Génies, performed at the Académie Royale de Musique. Anne-Madeleine Guesdon de Presles is the author of some fifty arias published in the first half of the 18th century. Mlle Laurant’s Concert was played “à Madame la Dauphine dans les grands appartements à Versailles”… So many female composers whose first names are not even known! From Paris to Versailles, Sophie de Bardonnèche unearthed manuscripts from libraries, some of which had not been played for centuries. Bringing together salon lutenists and opera singers, aristocrats and harpsichordists, this program is a portrait of these musicians who left their mark on the French scene in the 17th and 18th centuries.

SOPHIE DE BARDONNÈCHE

Sophie de Bardonnèche is a passionate baroque violinist. After a Master’s degree at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Amandine Beyer’s class, Sophie collaborated with the greatest baroque musicians on solo, chamber and orchestral projects. Her first solo album, “Destinées”, was released in October 2024 on the Alpha label, with a release concert at the Philharmonie de Paris. A pioneer of new repertoires, Sophie breathes new life into 10 French Baroque female composers, with her accomplices Lucile Boulanger on viola da gamba and Justin Taylor on harpsichord. The release was unanimously acclaimed by the press (Diapason d’Or, Le Monde, Top 2024 du Figaro Mazazine, Qobuzissime, Scherzo…). In 2015, Sophie created the ensemble Le Consort with Théotime Langlois de Swarte, Justin Taylor, Louise Pierrard and Hanna Salzenstein, which explores the sonata repertoire in baroque trio (2 violins, harpsichord and bowed bass). It quickly became recognized as one of the leading ensembles on historical instruments of its generation. Their recordings have been unanimously acclaimed by the French and international press, and Le Consort has been invited to the greatest halls and festivals such as the Auditorium de Radio France, La Roque d’Anthéron, the ElbPhilharmonie, La Grange au Lac… Since 2016, Sophie has been a member of the ensemble Les Arts Florissants. Alongside William Christie, she takes part in a great many productions as a chamber musician or within the orchestra. She is also invited to give concerts with Le Poème Harmonique (Vincent Dumestre), Jupiter (Thomas Dunford, Lea Desandre), Le Concert de la Loge (Julien Chauvin) or Le Concert Spirituel (Hervé Niquet)…
